Rizhao became a prefecture-level city in 1989 and established districts in December 1992. Located in the middle of the coastal area of China and southern part of Shandong Peninsula, Rizhao has Donggang District, Lanshan District, Ju County, Wulian County, Rizhao Economic and Technological Development Area, Shanhaiian Tourism and Vocational Zone, and Rizhao International Ocean City under its jurisdiction. The total land area of Rizhao is 5359 square kilometers, of which the built-up urban area takes up 99.6 square kilometers. The coastline is as long as 168.5 kilometers. Rizhao has 55 townships, 1951 villages and a population of 2.93 million. Rizhao is the eastern bridgehead of the New Eurasian Continental Bridge. The railways can reach Europe through Central Asia to the west and reach Mongolia to the north.
